This solid shot
projectile was designed for the purpose of destroying fortifications, cannon emplacements,
trenches, and buildings. When fired on hard, dry ground it often ricochet from one target
to another. According to The Confederate Field Manual "The initial velocity
of a cannon ball is about 1,500 feet per second. It varies from 1,400 feet to 1,800 feet,
depending on the weight of the charge and the strength of the powder."
