This pictured Federal Schenkl was captured by the Confederates and sent to an
arsenal where the original papier-mâché' sabot was replaced with one made of wood. The
Confederates did not have the capability for manufacturing the papier-mâché'
sabot. The
purpose of the iron pin seen at the base of the projectile was to help secure the wooden
sabot onto the tapered cone. The original Schenkl brass percussion fuze has been replaced
with a Confederate copper time fuze plug.
