Sylvanus Sawyer of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, patented this style of projectile on
November 13, 1855, United States patent #13,799. The patent date "Nov. 13, 1855"
is stamped on the slightly concave lead base. Note the nice pattern of lands and grooves
on the lead sabot from the 3.67-inch Sawyer rifled cannon. This specimen was found at Port
Hudson, as have been most examples of this type.
