The more rounded nose on this Schenkl projectile indicates that it
contains case-shot. The 3-inch Schenkl case-shot projectile has only been recovered
with lead case-shot balls and black pitch matrix. The Schenkl combination
fuze was
unreliable and under combat conditions was only 55% effective. Over 53,0000 3-inch Schenkl case-shot projectiles were purchased by the Federal Ordnance Department. Go
